AI in Aviation: Operations & CX Tutorial

Story-driven aviation CX tutorial: air-cargo journey mapping & scoring plus AI root causes - with Turkish Airlines Terminal context.

Friday 06:10 - the cargo milestone NPS will average away

Ayşe is CX Analytics lead for an air-cargo programme. Overnight:

  • Shipper tickets spike on “no milestone update” and “customs docs rejected again”
  • Partner emails blame handling vs flight vs last mile - three different owners
  • Passenger lounge NPS is green; cargo detractors are not visible in the same pack
  • Ops asks for a journey map and stage scores, not another theme cloud without owners

Monday’s scorecard will say cargo CSAT dipped. It will not tell Ayşe whether the root cause is acceptance documentation, in-transit visibility, or recovery communication after a miss.

That gap is what AI in aviation is for: customer journey mapping + scoring on air cargo - then AI themes and root causes that ops can own.

Aviation AI for air cargo starts with a journey map and stage scores — not one blended NPS.

What is AI in aviation? (CX definition)

AI in aviation in a CX context means using AI to read, classify, and explain feedback at scale - passenger surveys, cargo tickets, partner complaints - then route insights to network, ground, cargo, and digital owners.

For air cargo, two disciplines come first:

  1. Journey mapping - booking → acceptance → handling → flight → customs → delivery / recovery
  2. Scoring - friction and sentiment by stage (not one blended NPS)

Same disciplines as the Turkish Cargo PoC: journey mapping, stage scoring, voice at scale.

Ayşe’s 6-step aviation / air-cargo AI playbook

Step 1 — Separate passenger vs cargo voice Do not bury shipper friction inside passenger NPS. Inventory cargo tickets, partner feedback, surveys, and digital status complaints separately.

Step 2 — Map the air-cargo customer journey Name the stages and handoffs. If “customs” and “last mile” share one bucket, root cause will stay political.

Step 3 — Score friction by stage Urgency, volume, and emotional intensity by journey stage - so leadership sees which stage burns trust this week.

Step 4 — Unify VoC into one stream with stage tags Same delay complaint in email, portal, and call centre gets one theme ID + one journey stage.

Step 5 — Run AI themes + RCA with segment overlays Lane, commodity, region, B2B segment. A pharma temperature miss is not the same root cause as general cargo milestone silence.

Step 6 — Assign owners and close the loop weekly Ground ops, cargo product, digital tracking, partner management. Theme volume + stage score + time-to-fix.

Real-world reference: Turkish Airlines Terminal × Pivony (air cargo)

Pivony was selected as one of the 17 startups in the second cohort of the Turkish Airlines Terminal Acceleration Program - powered by Turkish Cargo - bringing AI-driven customer intelligence to logistics and air cargo.

Through the programme Pivony developed a Proof of Concept with Turkish Cargo, including work on:

  • Air-cargo customer journey mapping
  • Scoring friction and experience by journey stage
  • Analysing the voice of air cargo customers at scale

The programme later closed with Demo Day after a six-month journey - validating startup–enterprise collaboration on real aviation and logistics CX problems.

What to look for in aviation AI / VoC

  1. Passenger and cargo voice separated
  2. Explicit journey map for air cargo
  3. Stage scores, not only headline CSAT
  4. AI themes + RCA with lane / commodity segments
  5. Named ops owners and weekly close-the-loop
