What Is an AI Shopping Assistant? How It Works and How to Choose One for Your Store
What an AI shopping assistant does on an online store, how it differs from a chatbot, the warning signs of a pushy one, how they are priced, and a checklist for choosing and setting one up on Shopify.
Quick answer
An AI shopping assistant is software that talks with shoppers in natural language and helps them find and buy the right product. On an online store, it answers questions from the store's own catalog and policies, asks what the shopper needs, recommends and compares products, and can add the chosen item to the cart. A good one helps the shopper decide; a bad one pushes, gates answers behind an email address, or makes things up.
A shopper on a product page usually has one or two questions before they buy: will this fit, will it arrive in time, can I return it, which of these two is better for me. In a physical store, a good salesperson answers them in a minute. Online, most shoppers get a search bar, a size chart and a contact form, and many of them leave.
An AI shopping assistant tries to close that gap. This guide explains what these assistants are, how they work, what separates a helpful one from a pushy one, how they are priced, and how to choose and set one up on your store.
What is an AI shopping assistant?
An AI shopping assistant is a conversational AI that guides people through a purchase. It understands questions in plain language, asks follow-up questions, recommends products and answers pre-purchase questions about sizing, shipping, returns and payment.
The term covers two different kinds of product:
| Shopper-side assistant | Store-side assistant | |
|---|---|---|
| Who runs it | A platform the shopper uses: a general AI assistant, a search engine or a marketplace | The store itself, on its own website |
| What it knows | Products across many stores and the open web | One store's catalog, stock, prices and policies |
| Whose interest it serves | The shopper, comparing options across stores | The shopper and the store: the right product from this store |
| Examples | Shopping features in general AI assistants and search engines; marketplace assistants such as Amazon's Rufus | AI sales agents and AI shopping assistants installed on a store, for example from the Shopify App Store |
If you run an online store, the store-side kind is the one you can install. The rest of this guide is about that kind. The shopper-side kind still matters to you: those assistants read your product pages too, so clear, complete product information helps you in both places.
How an AI shopping assistant works
A store-side assistant follows roughly the same loop in every conversation:
- It learns the store. It reads your products, variants, prices, stock, product descriptions, policies and help pages. Better ones also take files and instructions you give them, such as a fit guide or how you want them to talk.
- It understands the question. The shopper writes the way they would talk to a person: "I'm new to snowboarding, which board should I get?" The assistant works out what they are actually asking.
- It asks before it recommends. If the answer depends on something it doesn't know (budget, size, skill level, the occasion), it asks one short question first.
- It answers from your store. It recommends products that are in stock, compares them, and answers questions about shipping, returns and payment from your own policies.
- It helps the shopper act. It shows product cards, links to the right variant, or adds the chosen item to the cart.
- It knows where to stop. Order tracking, refunds and complaints go to your support team or helpdesk. If it doesn't know an answer, it says so instead of guessing.
The quality of an assistant depends far more on the last four steps than on the model behind it. Two assistants built on the same AI model can behave very differently.
AI shopping assistant vs chatbot vs support AI
Many tools look similar from the outside: a chat bubble in the corner. They are built for different jobs.
| FAQ chatbot | AI support agent | AI shopping assistant | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main job | Answer a fixed list of questions | Resolve post-purchase tickets | Help shoppers decide and buy |
| Typical questions | Opening hours, shipping costs | Where is my order? I want a refund | Which size? Which model? Will it arrive by Friday? |
| Knows your catalog | Rarely | Partly | Yes, including variants and stock |
| Recommends products | No | Rarely | Yes, and asks questions first |
| Success looks like | Fewer emails | Tickets closed without an agent | Shoppers who buy the right thing |
Some products do several of these jobs. When you compare them, ask which job they were built for first, because that shapes how they behave and how they charge. For a side-by-side of sales-first and support-first tools on Shopify, see the best AI sales chatbot for Shopify.
What a good AI shopping assistant does
A good assistant behaves like your best salesperson on a good day:
- It understands before it sells. It asks what the shopper needs instead of listing the bestsellers.
- It recommends what fits, not what's priciest. A beginner gets a beginner's product.
- It knows the product the shopper is looking at. On a product page, "does this come in blue?" means this product, and the selected variant. We wrote about why this matters in does your Shopify AI assistant know which product the shopper is looking at?
- It only recommends what you can ship. Out-of-stock items are flagged or skipped.
- It answers from your published content. Return windows, shipping times and warranties come from your policies, not from the model's imagination.
- It speaks the shopper's language while using your store content.
- It is transparent. You can read every conversation and see what it said.
Warning signs: when an assistant hurts more than it helps
Watch for these in a demo or a free trial:
- It asks for an email before it answers. Some popular sales bots do this as soon as a shopper asks a question, because they are built to collect leads. Shoppers who wanted a quick answer leave. A helpful assistant asks for contact details only when the shopper wants the store to get back to them.
- It invents facts. Ask about a return policy you don't have or a product you don't sell. A good assistant says it doesn't know or points to your policy page.
- It pushes. Every answer ends with an upsell, a discount code or "buy now".
- It ignores context. It answers about a different product than the one on screen.
- You can't see what it said. No transcripts, no ratings, no way to check its answers.
- You can't tell what you are paying for. The bill doesn't show which conversations it is based on.
How AI shopping assistants are priced
Prices change often and vendor pages disagree, so compare pricing models first and current prices second. Four models are common:
| Pricing model | You pay for | Works well when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subscription tiers | A monthly plan, often by store traffic or features | Your traffic is steady and you want a fixed bill | Paying in months when the assistant helped nobody |
| Per conversation or per AI reply | Each chat or answer | Few visitors chat, and those chats are valuable | Costs that grow with curious visitors who never buy |
| Per resolution | Each ticket it resolves | Support deflection is the goal | It rewards closing conversations, not selling |
| Share of sales | A percentage of orders after a chat | You want to pay only when it drives revenue | How "after a chat" is defined, and whether it counts sales it had little to do with |
For share-of-sales pricing, ask three questions: how long after a chat an order still counts, what makes a chat count (any chat, or only one where the assistant actually helped), and whether you can see and dispute each charge. We compare these models in more detail in AI sales agent pricing: per seat, per conversation or per qualified lead?
How to choose an AI shopping assistant: a checklist
Use this list in demos and trials:
- Which job was it built for first: selling, support or FAQ?
- Does it learn your catalog, variants, stock and policies automatically, and can you add your own files and instructions?
- Does it ask clarifying questions before recommending?
- Does it know which product and variant the shopper is viewing?
- Can it add the chosen variant to the cart?
- What does it say when it doesn't know? Test it with a question your store can't answer.
- Does it ask for an email before answering?
- Can you read every conversation, and do shoppers rate them?
- Does it hand post-purchase questions to your existing support?
- How is it priced, and can you see what each charge is based on?
- How is shopper data handled, and is card data typed into the chat masked?
- How long does setup take, and does it need a separate account?
How to set up an AI shopping assistant on Shopify
On Shopify, most assistants install from the Shopify App Store and appear through your theme. The steps are similar for most apps:
- Install the app from the Shopify App Store and approve its permissions and billing.
- Turn it on in your theme. Most chat apps appear as an app embed: Online Store › Themes › Customize › App embeds.
- Check what it reads. Make sure your product descriptions, size guides, shipping and returns policies are complete. The assistant can only be as accurate as your store content.
- Add your own material. Upload fit guides, care instructions or FAQs that aren't on the store yet, and set the tone you want.
- Test it like a shopper. Ask ten real questions from your inbox, including two it shouldn't be able to answer.
- Review conversations weekly for the first month. Unanswered questions show you which content is missing from your store.
How to measure an AI shopping assistant
Pick a few numbers and watch them over time rather than chasing industry averages:
- Conversations and the share of visitors who start one.
- Helpful conversations: chats where the assistant answered a real question.
- Orders after a chat and their value, compared with similar visitors who didn't chat.
- Shopper ratings of conversations.
- Unanswered questions, the clearest list of what to add to your product pages.
- Hand-offs to support, to check the assistant isn't trying to handle post-purchase issues.

Frequently asked questions
What is an AI shopping assistant?
An AI shopping assistant is conversational AI that helps people find and buy the right product. On an online store it answers questions from the store’s catalog and policies, asks what the shopper needs, recommends and compares products, and can add the chosen item to the cart.
How is an AI shopping assistant different from a chatbot?
A basic chatbot answers a fixed list of questions. An AI shopping assistant understands open questions, knows the store’s catalog, variants and stock, asks clarifying questions and recommends products. AI support agents, by contrast, focus on post-purchase tickets such as order tracking and refunds.
What is the best AI shopping assistant for Shopify?
It depends on the job. For pre-purchase selling, choose an assistant that learns your catalog and policies, asks before recommending, adds items to cart and shows you every conversation. For support deflection, a support-first tool may fit better. Compare pricing models, test with real questions from your inbox, and check whether it asks for an email before answering.
How much does an AI shopping assistant cost?
Four pricing models are common: subscription tiers, per conversation or AI reply, per resolved ticket, and a share of sales after a chat. Prices change often, so compare the model first, then check current prices on each app’s listing.
Can an AI shopping assistant make mistakes?
Yes. Answers are AI-generated and can contain errors. Choose one that answers only from your store’s published content, says when it doesn’t know, and lets you read every conversation, and keep your product pages and policies complete.
